Netflix Flames Conan O'Brien for Mocking Their Plan to Release 700 Original Shows

Netflix recently announced plans to have as many as 700 original series on the streaming platform in 2018, which is good news for dedicated bingers and even better news for late-night hosts looking for something to tweet about in a humorous fashion. On Wednesday, Conan O'Brien joked the plan to release 700 shows explains Netflix's new "Quantity" slogan:

Netflix announced it will release over 700 original TV series and movies this year. That explains their new slogan, “Quantity.”

A full day later, whoever's tasked with running the official Netflix account hit back at O'Brien with a similarly quantity-themed joke about the comedian's long-running TBS series:

looking forward to the 1,138th episode of Conan tonight https://t.co/VZ04fAshoo

"Let's continue to add content," Netflix CFO David Wells said of the company's current strategy at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference last month. "It's working, it's driving growth." In addition to rocking a many as 700 original series, Netflix—as previously announced—is hoping to debut 80 original films this year. Netflix's total subscriber count had surpassed 117 million by the end of 2017, according toVariety.

I suppose there's also the chance that O'Brien and Netflix's tweet exchange is just a vaguely low-key way of teasing that, like many other comedians in recent months, a stand-up deal with the streaming giant is about to be announced. Though there's nothing here that would indicate that other than this writer's personal wishes, it has been quite some time (seven years, to be exact) since the release of O'Brien's excellent documentary Conan O'Brien Can't Stop. The timing is right for another non-Conan project from O'Brien.
