The "Planet of the Bass" saga is getting interesting.
At the end of July, New York comedian Kyle Gordon posted a parody video captioned "every European dance song in the 1990s" that's gained over 95 million views on Twitter and another 7M on TikTok.
The original clip featured TikTok star Audrey Trullinger embodying a fictional performer called Ms. Biljana Electronica alongside Gordon's DJ Crazy Times to spoof the lyrics, aesthetics, and music videos of Eurodance groups like Aqua and La Bouche.
Viewers fell in love with the parody, but when Gordon posted two similar videos, Trullinger was gone.
His second clip, per Rolling Stone, featured "health and yoga influencer Mara Olney," who is brunette and very obviously not Trullinger:
The third video put another new performer—TikTok creator Sabrina Brier, rocking a Barbie-pink jumpsuit—into the role. All three versions use the same backing track, with the studio female vocal coming from singer-songwriter Chrissi Poland.
"Full song make a release next week - Aug 15!" Gordon captioned the latest post, confirming that "Planet of the Bass" will transcend meme status and become a complete, streamable song next week.
One Twitter user explained a possible reason behind the switch-up.
"It's kinda funny that the gag here (euro band switching out a singer at the drop of a hat who isn't as good as the original) is flopping because not enough people are aware that this was an actual thing in the first place. Sometimes you can be a little too accurate," @paperghost penned.
Social media users—including fans of the first Ms. Biljana Electronica—have questioned Kyle Gordon's creative choices, with one writing, "You thought you could just get another blonde girl??? Where's my OG?"
Another took a page out of The Dark Knight, tweeting Batman and Joker's infamous interrogation scene. See more reactions below.
