It's been eight agonizing years since the abrupt return and equally abrupt cancellation of Prison Break on Fox.

But according to a new development from Hulu, fans of the critically acclaimed 2000s drama will finally witness its return with an upcoming streaming remake.

According to Variety, Hulu is officially moving forward with plans to reboot the show in the immediate years ahead. The news comes almost one year after the streaming service green-lit a pilot for a Prison Break reboot, marking a major step forward for the cult favorite TV series.

As fans of the original series likely know, Prison Break originally aired on Fox for four seasons. Debuting in the summer of 2005, the series eventually met with an ill-timed ending after Fox canceled the series in 2009.

Following its single season return to the network in 2017, Fox once again pulled the plug on the show at the end of its fifth season.

Though set in the same narrative universe as preceding seasons of Prison Break, this new Hulu version of the show will follow an entirely new cast of characters, as well as incorporating an entirely new central storyline.

Among the cast members joining the series, Emily Browning has signed on to star as lead character Cassidy, a former soldier-turned-prison guard who accepts a position at one of the country's most infamous prisons.

Starring alongside Browning is Drake Rodger, Lukas Gage, Clayton Cardenas, Georgie Flores, Myles Bullock, and JR Bourne. As of yet, there's no definitive date on when exactly the reboot will premiere on the streaming provider.

This new iteration of Prison Break also marks yet another entry in the series' increasingly expansive universe. In addition to the original TV show, Prison Break has also inspired a made-for-TV movie, a spin-off series, a video game, and a tie-in novel, among other media.
