It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will eventually return. That's the good news. The bad news is that season 13 of the FXX show may not come back for another year.
In an interview with TVGuide.com, It's Always Sunny star Kaitlin Olson explained that the delay is due to the cast already having enough on their plate. "We ended up pushing our next season a year because we were all busy with separate projects this year," Olson said. “So at the end of this coming shooting season of The Mick I’ll step right into Sunny after that.”
Olson, who is the star and co-executive producer of The Mick, found out that the Fox sitcom was being renewed for a second season. Olson's Sunny co-star and husband Rob McElhenney is directing a movie based on the video game Minecraft. Charlie Day has Pacific Rim: Uprising coming out next year. Danny DeVito is starring in the Broadway play The Price, and was recently casted in Tim Burton's live-action adaptation of Dumbo.
Meanwhile, there is some uncertainty surrounding the future of Glenn Howerton, who initially admitted that the show was going on an "extended hiatus" while dangling the idea of his departure from The Gang.
“I’m not being coy,” Howerton toldThe Wrap. “I’m not just trying to spin a mysterious tale here. It will be an artistic decision on behalf of myself, Rob, and Charlie as to whether my character comes back, more than a logistical decision.”
Howerton admits that he wants to do what's "best for the show," and if that means leaving the show, then so be it.
It's Always Sunny signed on with FXX for a 13th and 14th season back in April 2016.
