Popular commentary YouTuber Cody Ko is currently under fire after fellow creator D’Angelo Wallace uploaded a 15-minute video highlighting Tana Mongeau’s allegation that Ko had sex with her when she was a minor.
In his video titled "An uncomfortable conversation about Cody Ko," Wallace directly calls out Ko for burying the allegation that he slept with Mongeau when he was 25 and the internet personality was 17 years old. The alleged incident took place during an annual convention for online creators called Playlist Live in Florida, where the legal age of consent is 18 years old, according to both the state’s "Romeo and Juliet" law and the Legal Survival Guide.
The allegation is not new, but Wallace’s video is putting a spotlight on something Mongeau has discussed multiple times since 2021, including last month during a live recording of her podcast Cancelled. When Mongeau was asked which person she had slept with had the smallest dick, she responded that it was Ko.
"I can say that, I was literally seventeen," Mongeau added.
She once again discussed the incident in a June 21 episode of her podcast, reiterating the allegation that she "hooked up" with Ko when she was underage.
"This isn’t just some crazy tea. It was a crime," Mongeau said on her podcast, after alleging Ko was fully aware that she was a minor.
YouTuber Gabbie Hanna previously shared a story that Mongeau also referenced during her podcast, where Hanna told Ko not to sleep with the then 17-year-old.
"One time, I told a guy—I saw him making out with a girl at a party who was underage, and I pulled him aside and I was like, 'Hey, man, you probably don’t know. I know she, like, looks a little older. She’s underage. Watch it,'" Hanna said in a podcast episode Wallace includes in his July 14 YouTube video, linked below. "And he fucked her that night!"
Since this allegation first surfaced in 2021, and as of press time, Ko remains silent in response to Mongeau's accusation. Ko uploads videos revolving around comedy and commentary to his millions of subscribers regularly and is considered one of the most popular commentary YouTubers of all time. He's also a popular podcaster who won the New York-based Shorty Awards’ Best Podcast trophy in 2019 for his podcast-turned-music-group “Tiny Meat Gang.”
Wallace argues that the allegation against Ko has been successfully kept underwraps for so long specifically because Mongeau is a controversial figure, frequently criticized for her "problematic" behavior—while Ko is a beloved "golden boy" of YouTube. Still, Wallace asserts the severity of the alleged incident.
"To be clear, 17 is under the age of consent in many states, including Florida, where Playlist Live used to take place," Wallace said. "So this means that Tana Mongeau is accusing [Cody Ko] of statutory rape, and she’s not trying to hide that."
Wallace’s video has brought much more attention to Mongeau's accusation, prompting many online to blast Ko for the alleged incident. Check out some of the reactions below.
