Kevin Conroy, who voiced the animated Batman for years, has died. He was 66 years old.

TMZ reports his rep Gary Miereanu revealed Conroy passed away from cancer on Thursday. He was known for his work in Batman: The Animated Series on Fox from 1992-95. He continued playing the superhero in other TV shows, movies, and video games, like Batman Beyond, the Justice League series from 2001, Batman: The Killing Joke, and the popular Arkham video games.

Conroy started acting in 1980 in the soap opera Another World, and subsequently expanded into theater and television, ultimately winning seven awards for his voice roles. He also participated in DC Comics’ Pride anthology this year, writing the Finding Batman story, where he opened up about being a gay man.

Diane Pershing, who voiced the animated Poison Ivy opposite Conroy’s Batman, posted a note to Facebook when she learned of his passing.

“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday,” she wrote, per Yahoo. “He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.”

Conroy leaves behind his sister Trisha, brother Tom, and husband Vaughn C. Williams.

RIP.
