The Nun had a stellar opening weekend at the North American box office.
The Nun—the latest installment in the Conjuring series—earned a total of $53.5 million in 3,876 this weekend, the biggest debut in the series, Variety reports. Before, 2013’s The Conjuring was in the top spot with $41.8 million. The Nun also clinched the title for second-best September debut after Warner Bros.’ 2017 film It. In the international box office, The Nun accumulated $77.5 million for a total of $131 million.
Featuring Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga, The Nun smashed a few other franchise records, including the biggest Thursday showing out of all five films ($5.4 million), and the largest opening day ($22.3 million). Imax theaters also pulled in $4.5 million for The Nun’s debut.
The Nun is the fifth film in Warner Bros.’ Conjuring franchise, which includes 2013’s The Conjuring, 2014’s Annabelle, 2016’s The Conjuring 2, and 2017’s Annabelle: Creation. Together, the four movies have brought in $1.1 billion worldwide.
“We knew heading into the weekend that anticipation for The Nun was extremely high across multiple demos, but these results surpassed all our expectations,” Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' head of domestic distribution, told Variety. “We anticipate strong word of mouth to carry the film well into the fall.”
