Rick and Morty fans single-handedly pushed McDonald’s to bring back its Szechuan sauce back in 2017, and now the fast food company is resurrecting it once again.

The fan favorite sauce first launched in 1998 to promote Mulan, and then it vanished from existence until the Rick and Morty episode “The Rickshank Rickdemption” brought renewed interest to the sauce. It returned in 2017, although there were shortages, and it was brought back by popular demand in early 2018. Now it’s making its third comeback, albeit with a catch.

As fast-food chain announced on Monday, the sauce will be available exclusively via the official McDonald’s app starting March 31. “It’s only available for a few days on the app,” McDonald’s cautioned fans in its press release, which is fashioned to look like a leaked text exchange. “This time around the Szechuan sauce is served in limited-edition packaging with five different golden foil designs that spell out ‘Szechuan.’”

The intense reaction to the great Szechuan shortage of ‘17 prompted the show’s co-creator, Justin Roiland, to express sympathies to the McDonald’s workers stressed out by fans lining up for the sauce. "It's a fucking dipping sauce, guys," said Roiland. "I was bummed out really for the workers. The whole thing was bad on every side." Even the famously reclusive Frank Ocean had some thoughts on the situation.

Perhaps the decision to limit purchases of the sauce to the app, where customers can buy up to five packets at a time, is for the best.
