Nick Cannon has apologized after he spoke about his infant son’s death during the announcement of Bre Tiesi’s pregnancy with his eighth child this week.

Several days ago on his eponymous talk show, Cannon confirmed he and girlfriend Bre Tiesi are expecting a baby boy together after photos of their gender reveal party leaked just prior. “I’ve known about Bre’s pregnancy for a while now, even before my youngest son Zen passed in December,” he said at the time, expressing the “guilt” he felt after losing his infanct son to a brain tumor.

Now Cannon has taken a moment to apologize, highlighting that he seeks to respect the privacy of the mothers of his children.

“I wish to always protect and respect the privacy of the mothers of all my children,” the 41-year-old said. “I have such a great relationship and great admiration for everyone in my life…I failed to do so on Monday, because there was a lot going on. I didn’t know how to explain it, I didn’t know what to say, so I was probably talking too fast and probably misspoke. I know I can do better when dealing with delicate and sensitive discussions.”

He said that he “probably went too much into detail” in “expressing my feelings,” and regrets that his comments made it sound as though he was “making some comparatives.” He continued, “I didn’t have to do that. I didn’t need to do that, because those are two completely separate moments in my life.”

Cannon stressed that he wants to treat the lives of Zen and his upcoming child with “respect,” and that he’s “still grieving each and every single day.” He admitted it might “seem awkward” to the public “due to timing,” but he still “loves” the mother of Zen, Alyssa Scott. “I sincerely apologize to everyone involved for any extra pain or confusion that I may have caused.”

While hosting the Breakfast Club’s Angela Yee this week, Cannon revealed he chose to abstain from sex after he learned of his eighth child. “I felt like I was out of control and honestly, celibacy did help me through the journey of getting one with myself and being able to deal with this,” he explained.
