Millie Bobby Brown has teased the narrative arc for Eleven in Stranger Things Season 4, and according to her, it won’t be pretty.

By the end of Season 3, Eleven, aka Jane Hopper, was left without her powers after facing off against Billy and the Mind Flayer. Brown told Entertainment Weekly that the new episodes will put Eleven up against some of her biggest hurdles yet, and it’ll also further flesh out her backstory.

"You get to see Eleven in the darkest state she's ever been," Brown said. "This has definitely been the hardest season I've ever filmed. And there have been some of the scariest, scariest things that I've ever seen as a human, which you guys will get to see, for sure." She added that her storyline has really only covered when she was born and her escape from the facility in Season 1, but Season 4 will answer some lingering questions.

Finn Wolfhard, who portrays Mike Wheeler on the show, added that the show has continued to get “darker” each season. “It also kind of becomes [a] different genre... I mean, it gets everything. It gets funnier, it gets scarier, it gets more dramatic,” he said. “And I think that just comes with all of us growing up and getting older. We're not all going to be in mop top wigs when we're 40 years old, screaming about demogorgons and stuff. And I think this is a very good example of the Duffers really kind of treating our characters their ages.”

Series creators Ross and Matt Duffer previously teased that Season 4 will be the most horror-heavy so far. They also indicated that it’ll be the longest season to date. “I don’t think we have an episode clocking in under an hour," Matt said. "I think it’s almost double the length of any season. So that’s one reason it’s taken so long. It does have this sort of epic quality to it. It’s a different feel, for sure.”

The first volume of Stranger Things 4 hits Netflix on May 27, with the second volume to follow in July.
