Jim Carrey Weighs In on 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Design Controversy

Jim Carrey addressed the controversy around the movie design of Sonic the Hedgehog. The actor, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming feature film about the speedy blue video game character, said that you have to listen when the audience so resoundingly rejects something.

“Sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, it goes, ‘OK, I don’t want it,'” he said during a Showtime panel.

While he didn't seem enthusiastic about the idea of a tyranny of fandom, he was resigned to the fact that the movie will likely draw criticism even after the re-design of its lead character.

"We’ll have to see what that entails,” he said of the new Sonic. “It’s gonna happen how it happens. It’s either going to be a good thing or a bad thing.”

The producers and directors have been much more apologetic about Sonic's odd calves and human teeth. Producer Tim Miller said the message was heard loud and clear in an interview with Variety.

“Look, I was with fans," he said. "When the shit hit the fan, I went over there and said, ‘The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I fucked up.’"

First time director Jeff Fowler shared on Twitter that the movie's release date would be pushed back to accomodate for the character redesign.
