Dwayne Johnson Says He Doesn't Get Annoyed With Doing Famous Catchphrases for Fans

The actor and former WWE wrestler explains why he doesn't mind when he fans ask him to sing songs from 'Moana' or say his famous catchphrase.

It turns out that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson doesn’t mind giving the fans what they want.

The 52-year-old actor and pro-wrestler sat down with Complex’s Speedy Morman for a new episode of 360 with Speedy released on Wednesday.

At the 12:52 mark in the video linked above, Johnson was asked about his relationship with some of the elements of his career that have propelled him into a global superstar—namely, “The People’s Eyebrow” and his infamous WWE catchphrase, “If you smell what the Rock is cooking.”

“Do you still love it or has it become almost like zoo animal-y when people see you and they're like, ‘Hey, can you do the eyebrow thing?’” asked Morman.

“I get it. People ask me that all the time, ‘Do the eyebrow, do the eyebrow.’” Johnson replied. “I'll always have fun with it. You got to, man. Look, I did that shit in high school, that's where it comes from. That was my way of just of messing with girls… I took that into WWE and then some Wacky Wade turned that into this iconic thing with the character of The Rock.”

Johnson explained that the three things he regularly gets asked to do are to “do the eyebrow,” sing “You’re Welcome” from Moana, and recite the “If you smell…” catchphrase.

“I got a good relationship with all that, man,” he said.

Elsewhere into the conversation, Mormon wonders if Johnson ever has fun, pointing out that his followers on social media rarely see him relaxing or taking a day off.

“I have fun all the time and you just don't see it a lot,” said Johnson. “I feel like everybody curates their social media to fit whatever the thing is that they want the people to see them as. And for somebody who was very adverse to social media years ago, I never got it. Didn't understand it, didn't want to do it. I thought, ‘Well, who cares about what hamburger they eat or what you're gonna put on your whatever?’”

He continued, “You'll see moments of fun if you look at my page. But also what I found that a lot of people respond to is really the work part. Because the more I am able to fortunately build then a lot of times it's easy for people to forget that, ‘Man, there's so much work that gets put into this.’ So it's the reveal of ‘Here's the thing that I'm building. But let me just show you at four in the morning.’ That shit just is not fun.”
