Jay Ellis is set to star on Mindy Kaling’s upcoming sitcom Not Suitable for Work.
According to a report from Deadline published Wednesday, September 24, Ellis — who has previously starred on HBO’s Insecure and currently stars on Netflix’s Running Point — will have a recurring role on the upcoming Hulu series. He will play Bill Gibson, who is described as “a charismatic, successful investment banker who is admired for being his firm’s highest-earning managing director.”
Earlier this year, Ellis appeared in Freaky Tales and Running Point. He will next appear in the Peacock original series All Her Fault, which is set to premiere in November.
Ellis joins Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay, all of whom had been previously announced. Not Suitable for Work follows five work-obsessed twentysomethings as they navigate their careers and attempt to balance those with fun and enjoyment outside of work. The series takes place in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.
Deadline also detailed the previously announced characters. Hunt will play AJ Pascarelli, “a first-year analyst at a prestigious investment bank in New York.” Avantika, of Mean Girls fame, will play Abhinaya “Abby” Chilukuri, “a savvy assistant to a demanding celebrity stylist.” Angus will star as Davis Beau Bradley Barrett III, “a finance bro who wants to love and be loved.” Duvernay, who starred as Zion on HBO’s The White Lotus earlier this year, will play Kel Washington, a “medical student struggling to ace his exams while plotting his big break as an actor.” Martin is set to star as Josh Teitelbaum, “a bright, idealistic and occasionally sanctimonious New Yorker.”
Kaling created Not Suitable for Work and is executive producing the show alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein.
Not Suitable for Work will likely premiere on Hulu in 2026.
