The current iteration of the X-Men movie franchise, which began with 20th Century Fox's X-Men in 2000, is coming to a close on June 7 with Dark Phoenix, which is being touted as the final battle. Including Dark Phoenix, the franchise has spanned 12 films, bringing in fan favorites like Wolverine, Deadpool, Magneto and other characters from the pages of the Marvel Comics to the silver screen.
Dark Phoenix finds Simon Kinberg (who has produced every X-Men film, written a few, and is making this his directorial debut) revisiting the Dark Phoenix Saga tale that was made a part of 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, but this time aims to do the intergalactic comic tale justice, giving Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner) room to spread her wings and scorch the Earth...X-Men teammates and all.
Back in May, Complex News got to take part in a Dark Phoenix press junket being held in the United Kingdom. Aside from the aforementioned Kinberg and Turner, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, and Jessica Chastain were all on hand to talk about the latest X-film.
Kinberg, in speaking about why he chose this film to be his directorial debut, says "For me, growing up, Dark Phoenix was my favorite comic. My favorite saga, my favorite storyline int he X-Men comics. So, when the opportunity arose to tell this story, and to tell it right—differently than it was sort-of told in X-Men: The Last Stand—this was the story that I wanted to direct. This was the story I felt uniquely suited to tell as a director. For all of those reasons, I felt like I couldn't hand this over to anybody else."
All of that, and more (including Michael Fassbender getting his Marvin Gaye on, Sheridan talking about how un-cool it can be to shoot some of the scenes showing his powers, and the cast sharing their favorite X-Men film memories) are in the clip up above.
Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7, 2019.
