Almost three decades after Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure graced the silver screen and became a touchstone cult comedy for stoners and surfers across the country, a third installmentBill & Ted Face the Music—is officially in pre-production and being shopped around Cannes. The '89 original's quick-turnaround sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, is a full 27 years old now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will return as the eponymous pair of time travelers, with the screenwriting duo of Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon—who penned the original two films—back as well. Dean Parisot, who made 2013's Red 2 and the highly underrated 1999 comedy Galaxy Quest, will serve as director. Now that we can breathe a little easier, knowing that all the pedigree is firmly in place, it’s time to face the music in terms of plot.

Fortunately, Matheson and Solomon are facing the realities of a 27-years-later sequel, as the story will confront middle age and familial responsibility. Don’t worry though, this will still very much be a comedy in the vein of its predecessors—Bill and Ted are trying to write that one perfect song, with a time-traveling visitor warning them if they fail, the world will come to an end. This will lead to the time-traveling shenanigans we all know and love, replete with famous figures from history, musical legends, and discovering more than the two bros bargained for.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again,” said Reeves and Winter. “Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”

To give you a sense of how long Bill & Ted 3 has been stuck in development purgatory, we reported on this movie as early as 2011, when Keanu Reeves mentioned a finished script. Thankfully, we won’t need a time machine to actually see this thing, as this announcement confirms we’re going to get a brand new adventure sooner rather than later.
