A police chief in Georgia is under investigation after allegedly shooting his wife by accident, authorities say.

CNN reports that Peachtree City, Ga. Police Chief William McCollom shot his wife, Margaret, at the couple's home early yesterday morning. CNN adds that the McCollom placed the 911 call, telling emergency dispatchers that the shooting was accidental:

The initial reports that we got from a 911 call were that the chief had shot his wife, accidentally, twice. As a result of our preliminary interview, we have found that he only shot her one time, she said.

Brown said Peachtree City officers were called to the home at 4:17 a.m. and immediately realized it was their boss's house. The GBI was quickly called in to lead the investigation.

Margaret McCollom was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, where CNN reports that she's in critical condition. Chief McCollom, who is cooperating with the investigation, has been placed on administrative leave. Scott Ballard, the Fayette County District Attorney, will not decide charges will be filed until the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has completed its probe of the incident.
