Kanye West, in his apparent quest to basically just bring this Onion article to life, continued making it damn near impossible to remember the magic at the heart of his pre-MAGA creativity over the weekend. Performing on SNL, he gave a largely nonsensical diatribe about his continued support of a man who once boasted about celebrity status giving him the power to grab women "by the pussy."
The diatribe arrived just as his supposed new album Yandhi was set to hit the usual outlets. The album, however, did not arrive. Instead, West continued the reckless Trump shit on social media with a post showing wearing that hideous hat again. "This represents good and America becoming whole again," West said of the hat, marking a statement of abject inaccuracy. "We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love."
There's a lot to unpack there, including—but certainly not limited to—his immediately questioned mention of the 13th Amendment. West later attempted to clarify what he meant, noting the wording of the amendment's exception clause that—as explored in Ava DuVernay's documentary 13th—inspired the modern-day proliferation of prison labor.
Now, West is speaking on his 13th Amendment comments again.
"TMZ, I love y'all," West said outside of the Mel's Diner in West Hollywood Sunday. "What's good, bro? What I was saying was that the 13th Amendment is really slavery in disguise. It's something that we need to look into so I'm opening up the conversation. There's a lot of things that we don't wanna talk about."
West also read some notes from his phone that he took down on the plane back from New York. Among those notes were West's assertion that he "can't say" whether Abraham Lincoln was white or black.
When pressed further about which part of the 13th Amendment he wanted to change, West blamed his own lack of information on literally anyone but himself. "I won't be beat into submission of having lack of information on camera," he told the camera. "I'm gonna go and build up the information and I'll speak with Harvey tomorrow about it."
That same day, West spoke with a similar outlet, resulting in the extended footage below. In this clip, he very Trumpishly talks about the need for American factories while wearing clothing that was very unlikely to have been manufactured in the United States.
