Magi Merlin is back with a fresh new sound for her debut with Montreal label Bonsound. Produced by longtime collaborator Funkywhat, “Free Grillz” is an icy example of Merlin’s musical dexterity.
The house-inspired track brings in flavours of drum and bass and acid, marking a departure from the indie-tinged R&B sound of her past projects. Merlin’s confident, sultry vocal delivery ties the track together, making her artistic evolution feel seamless.
“I had never written a rap track so it was a moment of exploration,” explains Merlin. “It developed and became a track that I truly feel empowered by. I call out the people who constantly mispronounce my name and I brag about big butts and money I haven’t made yet.”
Merlin gained a cult following with her two EPs Drug Music and On My Way To The Listening Party. Earlier this year, we named her as one of our Canadian artists to watch out for in 2022.
