Slowthai, the Grammy-award and Mercury prize-nominated rapper, has appeared in court on two charges of rape, according to The Guardian. He was bailed out and will appear before the crown court next month.

The UGLY rapper, real name Tyron Frampton, appeared before Oxfordshire magistrates court via video link on Tuesday and was charged with oral and vaginal penetration of a woman without her consent, stemming from an incident in Oxford back in September 2021.

He spoke only to confirm his real name, date of birth, and his address in Northampton. Prosecutor Adam Yar Khan informed the magistrates the charge of rape must be heard at crown court, and that it remained an "indictable-only" offense.

The artist later took to social media to share a statement in which he claimed he is innocent.

“Regarding the allegations being reported about me," he wrote in the message. "I categorically deny the charges. I am innocent and I am confident my name will be cleared. Until then I will apply my energy to ensure this is concluded swiftly and justly.”

Slowthai was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the Grammy Awards in 2021. His sophomore effort, Tyron, had previously reached No 1 in the UK charts that year. He dropped off his third studio album UGLY on March 3.
