Iggy Azelea Talks "Toxic" Relationship With Playboi Carti

Iggy Azalea has shared why she’ll never get back together with Playboi Carti.

On Emily Ratajkowski’s podcast High Low with EmRata, the Australian-born artist opened up about her relationship with the rapper and what ultimately prompted their split. Though the 32-year-old kept details to a minimum, Azalea said there was a certain incident that led her to leave Carti, 26, and never look back, despite sharing a child with him.

“Like, right after I had my son, I left his father,” she told Ratajkowski. “Something happened one day with my son’s father and me and it was just one of those moments where you’re just like, ‘I didn’t wake up thinking this is what my day would be.’ But by the end of the day, I was on a plane to Los Angeles and I never went back and that was the end of it.”

The hitmaker continued, “Don’t get me wrong. We had a volatile relationship and you know that, you’re not an idiot. You know when something’s not working, I knew it wasn’t working. But I also just had a baby, it was COVID. There were a lot of things to navigate for me at that time and I didn’t think I’d be leaving when I left.”

Iggy and Carti started dating in 2018 and called it quits multiple times throughout the following years. She had accused the rapper of infidelity and claimed he had refused to sign their son’s birth certificate. Azalea admitted she felt pressured to stay with Carti, but ultimately chose to end the relationship to protect her child.

“My father and my mother had such a volatile relationship that I wish I had seen less of it,” she said on the podcast. “And so that was what happened to me in that moment that I had on that day. I was like, I will never let my son see this, because I don’t want him to see someone talk to me this way too, because I don’t want him to ever learn this, I don’t want him to be exposed to this. And even though I felt that I was in a bit of toxic cycle—a lot of a toxic cycle with the person…I’m accountable for ways that I participate in it. I just felt I had to be more accountable to myself into what I’m doing with my child, and even if there are days where I wanna go back to this, I just never would do it. I will never do it.”

Iggy’s interview aired about two months after Carti was arrested on a felony assault charge. The Whole Lotta Red rapper was accused of choking his pregnant girlfriend during a dispute over a paternity test. Iggy seemingly responded to the incident in a series of tweets last week, writing: “Warned you … Imagine having a pregnant girlfriend and pretending they don’t exist until it comes out you like to abuse them too [and] rarely visiting your actual son unless [it’s] because you’re running from whatever problems ya got going on in Atlanta [and] the press with your serial abuse of woman.”

Carti’s lawyer denied the allegations in a statement to Complex.

“Mr. Carter was falsely accused,” attorney Biran Steel said of his client, born Jordan Terrell Carter. “Pursuant to my communications with the Fulton County District Attorney‘s Office, this case will be dismissed without any prosecution or litigation.”
