Kevin Gates is being accused of illegally transporting cash into a Louisiana state correctional facility, according to the state's Department of Corrections.
On Monday, Gates posted pictures to his Instagram page that appeared to show him flashing a stack of 100 dollar bills while visiting inmates at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel. Though it's unclear if the money was real, the since-deleted Instagram post sparked an investigation.
In a statement to The Advocate, Louisana Department of Corrections spokesperson Ken Pastorick explains that Gates behavior is a violation of their contraband policies.
"As indicated in the photograph, it appears Mr. Gates had a large sum of cash, which is unacceptable, and a violation," Pastorick said. "It is against Elayn Hunt Correctional Center policy to bring case exceeding $300 into the prison, and any amount above that is considered contraband."
Pastorick went on to say that the photos may have been captured by inmates who work for the prison magazine and that Gates' presence means he signed documents acknowledging his understanding of the prison's policies.
According to Gates' Instagram post, the rapper was visiting several inmates, including C-Murder and Lee Lucas. The Advocate originally identified the latter as Gates' son, but has since issued a correction identifying him as Gates' father. The photos in question can be viewed on C-Murder's Instagram account.
Currently, there is no indication on what punishment the rapper could face.
Complex has reached out to the rapper's reps for more information, but they have yet to respond.
