Kanye West and EMI Once Again Resolve Settlement (UPDATE)

UPDATED 7/9, 8:40 p.m. ET: According to court documents obtained by Complex, the lawsuit between Kanye West and EMI has been settled. Both parties had until Feb. 14 to raise any objections, which neither did. The only matter brought up was that the case be dismissed with prejudice. Both West’s lawyers and EMI’s lawyers signaled that neither side would be responsible for the other’s legal fees.

Kanye West and EMI have finalized a lawsuit concerning the publishing contract Ye signed with the company in 2003.

On Jan. 13, West and EMI informed the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York that they had “reached an agreement in principle resolving all issues,” Pitchfork reports. If neither party files any conflicting motions, then the suit will be legitimately settled on Feb. 14, 2020.

West originally sued EMI in January 2019, claiming that the company, which has managed his catalog since 2003, was attempting to box him into a lifelong career of “servitude.” EMI countered with a federal suit in March, alleging that West’s charge wasn’t credible because he had signed multiple contract extensions with the company.

In September, it looked like both parties had reached a decision. However, that changed in December, when, in the eleventh hour, EMI decided to re-open the case. A judge granted an extension until Jan. 13 to reach a mutual agreement.

Kanye capped off 2019 with the release of his album Jesus Is King and his record with the Sunday Service Choir titled Jesus Is Born. He also premiered two operas last year, Nebuchadnezzar and Mary.
