The city of South Fulton, Georgia officially declared Sept. 16 to be Gunna Day.

The rapper posted photos and video from the ceremony where he was honored by Mayor Bill Edwards, who read an announcement that remarked on Gunna’s successful career as an artist, being raised by a single mother with his four brothers, and uplifting the community.

The same day, Gunna’s Drip Closet debuted at his former school, Robert McNair Middle School in College Park. Everything inside is free for students.

“Amazing. Perfect,” the rapper said when he saw the project unveiled, per CBS 46. “This is things I said I was gonna do when I got in a position to do it, so I just gotta follow that.”

The project is in partnership with Atlanta organization Goodr, which works to combat hunger. “He’s providing a way of life for these families and this is something that is legendary,” said Goodr founder Jasmine Crowe of Gunna. “I don’t think anything like this has been done before in the city of Atlanta.”

Around 900 students and their families will now have access to nutritious food, snacks, toiletries, shoes, and clothing, with shelves being restocked every week.

According to Mayor Edwards’ address, Gunna has given back immensely to his and other communities. “Since 2018, through his Gunna Great Giveaway Foundation, Gunna has exhibited his efforts to serve the greater good, by hosting free grocery stores in the community and providing over $100,000 in gift cards to families during the pandemic and supplied thousands of families in Houston, Texas with household items after the 2021 historic winter storms.”

The address continued, “Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council recognizes Gunna for his service to the community, applauds his outstanding contributions to the music industry, acknowledges him for setting a stellar example to the young people in our community and do hereby proclaim, Thursday, September 16, 2021 as Sergio Giovanni ‘Gunna’ Kitchen Day in the City of South Fulton.”
