Fivio Foreign has addressed recent conversations surrounding drill music and the culture around it, and argued that it’s doing more good than harm.

In a new interview with TMZ, the New York rapper explained his stance on those wanting to prevent drill from hitting the airwaves—which comes after DJ Drewski of Hot 97 said he’s dropping “diss/gang” records from his rotation. Drewski previously shared that “if ya dissing each other in the songs, don’t even send it to me.”

“This the drill community,” Fivio said. “I know the police and everybody, they be looking at us like n****s is starting trouble. N****s ain’t really starting trouble, they tryna feed their kids. They tryna take away the drill music off the radio. They tryna stop it from being on the radio.”

Fivio elaborated, saying that after meetings with executives and other important figures like the late Pop Smoke’s mother, “it’s not the music that’s killing people, it’s the music that’s helping n****s from the hood get out the hood.”

“We need that,” he added. “If you take that from n****s, n****s will be in the hood killing each other and going crazy on each other.”

Later in the discussion, which takes place outside in New York, the interviewer asks Fivio about the proposed “Rap Music on Trial” bill in New York State, which has been backed by Jay-Z, Big Sean, Meek Mill, Fat Joe, and more, in an effort to get prosecutors to stop using rap lyrics as evidence in criminal trials. Back in January, several musicians asked the state for the legislation to be passed after it made its way through the Senate Codes Committee.

“To me, that shit don’t make sense because it’s n****s out there that don’t even write they own music,” Fivio said. “So if you going to indict n****s and lock n****s up over they music, then that means you gotta go lock Denzel [Washington] up for being a bad cop in Training Day… You can’t just target n****s cuz’ n****s making music, and they feel like that’s the lowest form of entertainment. ‘Why they rich, why they buying these cars, why they got this much? I don’t fuck with that.”
