Max B has been incarcerated since 2009, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been growing as an artist. The Silver Surfer is working on a new album called Negro Spirituals and he just shared the first single, "Black and I'm Proud."

“It’s about me really evolving as a person, evolving as an artist,” Max said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “My music five or six years ago — even before when I used to make music — it was good, but it lacked the experience I have today. The concept fell into my lap: I’m gonna transform from the old Max B into a powerful new artist with a display of content that they aren’t used to. I’m trying to give the people some substance.”

Max B also said that he feels like too many other artists don't have the best interests of other people at heart, and he attacks them at length on the new track.

“If I got an issue, a personal problem, sometimes I put it in my music to address it,” Max B said. “I was talking about people in general, people that’s not for what we’re trying to do, they’re trying to hold us back while we’re trying to elevate and pick our people up.”

The artist was convicted on charges related to a deadly robbery in Fort Lee. Though he wasn't present at the robbery, prosecutors argued that Max B helped plot the attack that lead to the death of David Taylor, Jr. However, his sentence was vacated in 2016 after attorneys argued that B's original trial lawyer — who was also his manager — had a conflict of interest.

Max B contended that his original lawyer talked him out of a 10-year plea deal. After the conviction was vacated, Max B's sentence was dramatically shortened down to 20 years on an aggravated manslaughter charge.

Even with those years over his head, Max B isn't stopping his music career. Give a listen to his latest below. And check out his recently shared loosies "Don't Push Me" and "Hold On."
