E-40 jumped on Instagram to solve Kodak Black's claim that Lil Yachty and D.R.A.M. stole his "broccoli" style. Turns out E-40 was using the word way back in the '90s long before either of the rappers were on the music scene.
40 shared the exact moment of his 1993 music video for "Practice Lookin' Hard" where he dropped the bar, "Got me a baggy full of broccoli and a crooked Ides 22/I feel great, I'm mean muggin', but I feel great." The rapper summarized his case in the clip's caption. "In 1993 I refer weed as BROCCOLI On my song 'Practice Looking Hard' In 1998 I made a song called 'BROCCOLI' On my Gold double album 'The Element of Surprise' #PROBLEMSOLVED #BROCCOLI Fuck beef get money! 💸."
There's even more proof from 40 on the Genius annotation of the same song where he annotated the lyric explaining how he arrived at the nickname for his weed. "I started calling medicinal [weed] 'broccoli' because it’s green and bushy. I was looking at some medical back in 1993 with my producer Studio Ton and we was like, 'Man, look at it—it looks exactly like broccoli.' I call it 'lettuce' too."
If you're just catching up, the recently released Kodak Black claimed that D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty stole his style with their song and use of the term "Broccoli." "Who these n*ggas is, chopping my lil swag, man, talking about broccoli?," Kodak said in his Instagram video. "For now on, I don't smoke broccoli no more. I smoke cantaloupe—since these square ass n*ggas trying to steal my lil swag." In response, Yachty insisted that he always shouts out Kodak when he performs "Broccoli." It looks like E-40 quickly solved the problem as to who we really have to thank for "broccoli."
