A Los Angeles suspect in a high-speed chase went viral for stopping to get gas — and still managing to escape.
ABC 7 reported that the chase, which began around 10 p.m. PT, took place in the Wilshire area of Los Angeles after a dark blue Infinity 250 sedan was reported stolen.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly weaved in and out of traffic and reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour to escape the police.
After police cars and helicopters had given up on the chase (but with a news helicopter hovering overhead), the driver stopped at a Shell gas station to refuel. With the top of his shirt covering his face, the perp filled his tank up, then got back on the road.
His reckless driving with a now-full tank led to police chasing him again. Eventually, the pursuit came to an end when the suspect hopped out of the car under an overpass and, somehow, escaped custody. How? Police believe another driver picked him up or carjacked someone.
Los Angeles’ car chases always seem to get national attention for how over-the-top they are. Last July, armed robbery suspect Daiyaan Henderson went viral for getting into a police chase with his girlfriend and child in the car with him. If that wasn’t bad enough, he also live-streamed the entire situation on Instagram.
After a group of men fled the scene of an armed robbery in Beverly Hills, police officers gave chase to a vehicle throughout South Los Angeles. After a short time, three men jumped out of the car and fled. One of them was Robinson, who hopped into a Kia sedan that had his girlfriend and infant daughter inside.
As he fled through the streets and hit up to 70 miles per hour while weaving through traffic and running red lights, Henderson filmed from the inside of the car when his girlfriend was convincing him to turn himself in.
"Just let us out the car," said the woman, to which Henderson replied, "They going to kill me."
She pleaded with him to pull over, for everyone’s sake.
"You're not thinking about your baby right now. You're fixing to get your baby killed," she said. "It's over, bro, it's over."
The chase eventually came to an end when, after turning down a dead-end road, Henderson hugged his girlfriend and child and complied with the instructions from the police.
