The sentence of Alexis Martin, a child sex trafficking survivor who had been given 21 years to life for involvement in a fatal shooting, has been commuted.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced the move late last week, adding that the details of her case are "particularly unique." PerCBS News, Martin was accused of involvement in a 2013 incident in which she and three adults were said to have planned to rob Angelo Kerney, a man described in court documents as a "pimp." While Martin did not shoot Kerney, she was said to have distracted another person involved in the incident via "dancing and sex."
While Martin pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and a count of felonious assault after being moved from juvenile court, she and her legal te`am argued in 2018 that her history of sex trafficking had not been adequately looked into during the hearing that ultimately determined whether she would be charged as an adult.
Martin recently appeared in the documentary Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project, an Oxygen special which saw Kardashian and Martin discussing the sex trafficking history and more.
"Everybody really failed her in her life and nobody really protected her when the system really could have," Kardashian said in the doc.
Last Friday, Kardashian thanked Gov. DeWine for commuting the sentence, adding that she was "honored" to have been part of telling Martin's story.
