There was plenty of violence by Donald Trump supporters inside his rally in Asheville, North Carolina on Monday. However, there was turmoil outside the rally as well, as a Trump supporter named Richard Campbell punched a 69-year-old woman who was protesting the Republican candidate.
The woman, Shirley Teeter, has sore ribs from falling on her oxygen tank after receiving the blow, but told local station WLOS that she didn't break any bones.
Teeter is a lifelong activist who attended demonstrations against the Vietnam War and for civil rights in the 1960s. She said that she decided to speak up against the Trump campaign because it was "sickening my heart."
Teeter expressed her thanks to the police who drove her home, and to all the people who sent well wishes via social media. And even after everything she went through, the fiery anti-Trumper still managed to stay on message. She called the local news and had one final question, according to the station: "if people find a Trump supporter punching her in the face deplorable." This slick PR move, a reference to Hillary Clinton's now-famous "basket of deplorables" comment and Mike Pence's subsequent reluctance to call former KKK leader David Duke "deplorable," made Teeter the darling of the political class.
