As much as we want to take it easy on John McCain, because, you know, he’s decorated war vet and has brain cancer, we have to call him out for this one.
The Republican senator, who voted yes on the GOP’s very controversial tax reform bill, tweeted Monday, “We’re only 74 Twitter followers away from 3M – spread the word & help us reach this big milestone!”
Okay, so it probably wasn’t McCain himself tweeting, but some lowly and social media manager, suffering from caffeine withdrawal. Whoever hit send, Twitter didn’t care. Naturally, his plea backfired pretty epically.
McCain’s following subsequently dropped to 2.97 million followers, and his tweet only garnered 22,000 replies and 4,300 likes. That’s .001 % likes and less than 1% replies. That’s some pretty depressing math, folks.
Users sounded off on why the chose to unfollow the Arizona Senator and President of the Armed Services Committee. It appears his vote in favor of the GOP tax reform bill hasn’t played well with his base, or at least his Twitter base.
Others were quick to note how trite and tone-deaf his plea for more followers came across in the way of such a controversial decision. One user said, “Seriously? You just voted for the save the rich ppl tax bill and this is what you want us to focus on?”
If Republicans are suffering from a crisis of priorities and are as out of touch as their critics have alleged, this kind of oblivious messaging certainly isn’t doing them any favors.
