Donald Trump unveiled new tariffs on countries and territories all around the world Wednesday.
"We will charge them approximately half of what they are and have been charging us, so the tariffs will be not a full reciprocal," Trump explained, per CNN. With tariffs ranging from 20 percent for the European Union to 34 percent for China, the Trump administration made it clear that no one is safe. Not even those freeloading penguins in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
According to CBS News, the remote islands were included in the Trump administration's baseline 10 percent tariff, even though there isn't a single human being living in the external Australian territory. The Heard Island and McDonald Islands are solely inhabited by penguins.
NPR even confirmed with the U.S. Census Bureau that the penguins did not engage in any trade with the United States last year.
It remains to be seen how the penguins occupying the Heard Island and McDonald Islands will receive the news of the tariff. Or more importantly, if they will even receive this news at all.
As we eagerly await their response, people have taken to X to poke fun at the Trump administration's bizarre blunder.
