The muse for Netflix's Making a Murderer, Steven Avery, has won an appeal to have his case re-examined.

According to the Guardian, Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner filed the appeal on the basis of the remains that were found on Avery's property. Zellner believes that the bones have a possibility of not belonging to the victim Teresa Halbach. But because they were never tested for DNA rather given directly to Halbach's family, Zellner believes a state law was violated. On this grounds, Steven Avery will have his case re-examined by a Wisconsin court.

This is a major development in a case that has captivated the country since the Netflix series premiered in 2015. Zellner's lawyer took to Twitter with a post expressing how excited she is that her client is one step closer to freedom.

"The DREAM LIVES ON for Steven Avery to be FREE AGAIN," Zellner tweeted. "The WRECKING CREW IS ON IT."

Yet despite the progress, there is still a lot that needs to be done for Avery to be able to shake his cell. When a case is being re-examined but the state, the state must prove that a law was broken and admit they were wrong. After this, the judge can grant the defendant a retrial where his/her lawyers must undermine the original theory of event. This process could take years. But for Avery, it is one step closer to proving his innocence.
