One Philadelphia man is now a local legend after he helped save children from a burning building. His act of heroism didn't make him forget that his hometown's football team had failed him that Sunday.
The Eagles lost 27-24 to the Detroit Lions thanks, in part, to two critical drops from wide receiver Nelson Agholor. This and his fumble made Agholor Philadelphia's easy target for the evening. That frustration stuck with West Philadelphia resident Hakim Laws as he came across a burning building early on Monday morning.
Smoke hindered a family on the top floor from safely exiting the building through the stairs. This prompted Laws and his former co-workers to stand underneath the window and catch children that the father was dropping down to safety. In a time that's more crucial than any football game, Laws was able to catch every child thrown his way as no major injuries were reported from the fire. During an interview with Philadelphia's local-CBS affiliate, Laws made sure to point that he's calmer in clutch moments than the Eagles wideout.
"I see a guy hanging out the window screaming that his kids were in there," Laws explained. "My man just started throwing babies out… and we were catching them, unlike Agholor and all his mishaps."
According to authorities, the fire was sparked by an air conditioning unit in the building. Ten people were displaced by the fire and three people were taken to local hospitals for evaluations.
