Is a civil war about to break out behind-the-scenes at the very top of the NFL food chain? It sure sounds like it, if you believe everything that was reported in a new ESPN The Magazine story. The piece, which was penned by Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham, details how Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is trying to have NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell removed from power right now, even though the majority of the other NFL owners just approved a new contract for him.
Jones is reportedly very upset with the way Goodell handled the Ezekiel Elliott situation. Goodell decided to suspend Elliott for six games in light of a domestic violence incident he was allegedly involved in last year, and while Elliott fought the suspension every single step of the way, he eventually agreed to stop fighting it and serve it earlier this week. It may ruin the Cowboys' chances of making the playoffs this season.
Jones didnโt like the way the situation played out, and according to the ESPN The Mag piece, he let Goodell know about it in no uncertain terms during a phone conversation earlier this NFL season. Jones reportedly told Goodell that he didnโt think the suspension he handed Elliott was fair, and furthermore, he told Goodell that he was going to use the power he wields to come after him because of it. He also reportedly referenced Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the fight he put up after Goodell punished New England following the Deflategate scandal and said that Kraftโs fight would be nothing compared to what he had planned.
"Iโm gonna come after you with everything I have," Jones told Goodell. "If you think Bob Kraft came after you hard, Bob Kraft is a p*ssy compared to what Iโm going to do."
Itโs unclear what exactly Jones has planned for Goodell. But the fact that Jones called Kraft a "p*ssy" during his call with him has a lot of NFL fans losing it right now. Kraft has been trending on Twitter for most of Friday, and people have been surprised to find out why. The reactions to one billionaire NFL owner calling another billionaire NFL owner a "p*ssy" have been entertaining, to say the least.
We have no idea whatโs going to happen next during the Jones/Goodell drama. But if this is how things are getting started, we can only imagine how itโs going to play out.
