It’s been almost six years now since JaMarcus Russell has been a part of an NFL team. The Raiders parted ways with him—just three years after selecting him No. 1 overall in the 2007 NFL Draft—in early May 2010. Since then, Russell has tried desperately to get back into football, but he hasn’t found any takers.
In a new Sports Illustrated film, Russell speaks about where he’s at in his life now, and somewhat surprisingly, he admits that he still wants to play football. He also reveals that, last season, he sent out letters to a bunch of NFL teams in an attempt to get someone to sign him. And in the trailer above, you can hear Russell talk about the steps he would be willing to take to get one more chance in the league.
“God, he makes things happen for a reason,” he says. “Who’s to say? You might see me back. You never know, you never know. Whatever it is. I can be a water boy and work my way onto a scout team. It doesn’t matter. I’ll go play for free [Ed. note: He can definitely afford to!]. I think there’s plenty of room for me. I think so.”
