Following his loss to Dmitry Bivol earlier this month, Canelo Álvarez has announced that he’ll be seeking a rematch after a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin.
On Monday, Álvarez confirmed that his trilogy match with Golovkin will be his next fight, and he’ll be moving back down to the super-middleweight class for that match, per Talk Sport boxing editor Michael Benson. The fight will see him defend his World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization world titles.
After that, he'll be gunning for that rematch with Bivol, who beat out the Mexican boxer by unanimous decision. The only other time he lost, which was also by decision, was against Floyd Mayweather in September, 2013.
“Surely Yes," he said when asked about whether he'll stick to his plans to fight Golovkin in September before seeking a rematch with Bivol, per The Daily Mirror. "We already had that contract, that deal so we have to continue what we started and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol. Unfortunately we lost [against Bivol], but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we're going to do it again."
If everything goes as planned, Álvarez will return to the ring to fight GGG on September 17.
