Fijan boxer Ubayd Haider, formerly known as Nathan Singh, died more than two weeks after he sustained injuries from a fight.
According to the Associated Press, the 25-year-old went up against Runqi Zhou during an IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title fight on Oct. 26 in Nadi, Fiji.
Haider collapsed after the fight and had been in a coma at the Lautoka Aspen Hospital after an emergency brain surgery.
Haider’s wife, Helen Singh, confirmed his death on Monday through a social media post, writing, “I thank God for the incredible 25 years of your life and the last five spent with me. Thank you for loving me and for the incredible memories we shared together. Thank you for giving me the best gift anyone could ask for...our beautiful boys.”
Zhou also expressed his condolences to Haider’s family and the Fijian community on Instagram.
“Rest In Peace to Ubayd Haider, he was a fighter till then end. Condolences and deepest sympathies to his family and the people of Fiji 🇫🇯,” Zhou wrote.
The Boxing Commission of Fiji is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Haider’s death, according to the organization’s chairman, Adi Sarayan.
