Joel Embiid on Sixers Not Landing LeBron or Kawhi: 'I Want to Be Better Than Those Guys'

The Philadelphia 76ers have had a relatively uneventful offseason. Though the Sixers were considered a contender to land LeBron James or Kawhi Leonard, they didn't bring in either—or any other big-name player, for that matter. But Joel Embiid isn't concerned.

In a recent conference call, Embiid said he "literally did not really care" about the Sixers adding another star.

"When my season ended, there was a lot of talk about adding guys," the star center said, according to Philly.com. "I literally did not really care because I want to get better. I want to be better than those guys that were mentioned, if I'm not already better than them."

Philly brought back veterans J.J. Redick and Amir Johnson on one-year deals while allowing Marco Belinelli (Spurs) and Ersan Ilyasova (Bucks) to head elsewhere. The Sixers also added Wilson Chandler.

Embiid is focused on improving his own game. "I want to win the MVP," Embiid said. "I feel like at the end of the day it might be an individual award, but when I play better, the team also does. I feel like if I'm an MVP candidate or if I win the MVP, that means we are on another level."

Sixers fans clearly aren't stressing too much considering the team's foundation of Embiid and Ben Simmons, but it'd be fair to argue that Philly needs another piece to contend with the Celtics (or even the Raptors) in the East. Nonetheless, the team's strategy may be to "wait and see" how the first half of the season goes.
