Starting at 10 p.m. ET May 2 (and then running every following Wednesday for a month) HBO will debut a five-part documentary series called Being Serena based around Serena Williams, as you undoubtedly already guessed. As has become the standard these days, the mini-series will also be watchable on HBO Now, HBO Go, HBO On Demand, as well as the networks streaming services partners.
According to Deadline, the series will provide previously unavailable behind-the-scenes access to Williams' marriage, pregnancy, transition to early motherhood, and eventual return to the court. In addition to the family side of her life, the series promises to let you take a look at the tennis phenom's "expanding role as a businesswoman and investor in the worlds of tech, fashion, fitness, and philanthropy."
“HBO is honored to work with Serena Williams on such a personal project,” HBO Sports executive vice president Peter Nelson said in a statement. “Even though she has been in the spotlight since her teenage years, Serena continues to capture the imagination. With our partners at IMG, we look forward to giving viewers a revealing, behind-the-scenes portrait of her life on and off the court.”
“Serena Williams is a force unlike any other,” Co-President of WME and IMG Mark Shapiro added to that. “Her entire life is one of the hero’s journey, and it has been a privilege to work with her as she enters this next phase. HBO was an incredible partner in developing a unique look into Serena’s world, and we look forward to sharing this all-access story with the world in May.”
Being Serena will be the third time that HBO and IMG have teamed up for a sports documentary, following Gonzaga: The March to Madness (which aired in 2016) and UConn: The March to Madness (which aired in 2017, and was nominated for an Emmy). In the meantime, check out the trailer above.
