24. adidas Fire

Year: 1986

Like the APS or the LA Trainer's peg system, adidas's Fire shoe came complete with an excellent gimmick — removable pads would hone the level of cushioning to meet your requirements. But as with all the best technologies (and it's particularly true of 1980s' adidas output), the application ups the aesthetic greatness of the shoe. That blast of color on the midsole complements the sleek upper — itself the sum total of some of the greatest adidas running looks ever — to make state-of-the-art into a timeless design that's occasionally overlooked. Never cheap or easy to find in the first place, there's an aura to this shoe. Connoisseurs understand and opinions of the rest don't matter.
