Inspired by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tinker could see the inside of the building – escalators, heating, and air conditioning, even the people, and as he called it “the guts.” He brought that idea to the sneaker people at Nike. After much debate and convincing and a little remodeling of the Air Bag for full cushion, the exposed Air unit was born.
