Elmo proves even the friendliest muppet has their breaking point.
The beloved Sesame Street character went viral this week after a resurfaced video show him going off on a rock. Yes, an actual rock. Shared by Twitter user @Wumbooty, the clip shows Elmo expressing his frustration with a gray stone named Rocco, Zoe’s pet rock that was introduced to the series in the late 1990s.
The 35-second clip was taken from a 2004 episode titled “Elmo feels he’s treated unfairly by Rocco.” It shows the red furry character asking Gabi (Desiree Casado) if he may have an oatmeal raisin cookie, which he claims are his “favorite.” However, Gabi regretfully informs Elmo she just gave the last cookie to Rocco.
“That’s OK, Gabi,” he says. “Elmo will just take this one.”
As he reaches for the oatmeal cookie, Zoe steps in and tells Elmo that Rocco already has dibs on the oatmeal raisin cookie. And Elmo isn’t having it.
“Rocco!?! Rocco’s a rock, Zoe! Rocco won’t know the difference,” he tells his friend.
“Yes he will!” Zoe responds. “You can’t have that cookie, Elmo! Rocco wants to eat it!”
“How? How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo. Rocco doesn’t even have a mouth,” he fires back. “Rocco is just a rock. Rocco is not alive.”
Twitter users couldn’t get enough of this random beef and Elmo’s ability to call out Zoe’s BS.
On Wednesday afternoon, Elmo took to Twitter to shed some more light on the situation and let the world know where he and Zoe stand. As for his relationship with Rocco? Elmo is pleading the fifth.
“Don’t worry everybody! Elmo and Zoe practiced sharing and are still best buds forever!” he wrote. “Elmo loves you Zoe! Ha ha ha! Elmo doesn’t want to talk about Rocco.”
