Fortnite just got a bit bigger.
Sony announced Fortnite players will be allowed to play with players on other platforms including Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
"We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution," read a blog post from Sony’s PlayStation chief, John Kodera. "The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross-platform gameplay, progression, and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems."
Yes, even Mac gamers can get in on the cross-platform fun. (Prior to this, only mobile gamers and PC players were able to cross-play with PS4 gamers.) Fortnite players will not only be able to play together, they'll also have access to skins and other products available on the separate platforms. They'll also be able to gain access to their profile and progress in the game no matter which platform he or she is using at the time.
The move comes after Sony faced backlash after Fortnite dropped on Nintendo Switch. As Variety notes, several players who started playing the game on PS4 were unable to login when they moved to Nintendo Switch. Instead, they received an error message telling them to "create a new account" which would require them to start from scratch in building their character. Luckily, those days are over.
