The streamer confirmed the project on Thursday, noting that Samuel—whose acclaimed The Harder They Fall hit Netflix in November—will helm a film adaption of the original Boom! Studios series Irredeemable and its spinoff Incorruptible. Handling the script is Kemp Powers, whose other credits include the Oscar-winning Soul and the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
According to a press release, Boom! fans can expect this adaptation to feature the main characters from the two series (both created by Mark Waid) squaring off against each other. Producers on the film have been confirmed to include Jeymes Samuel, James Lassiter, Boom! Studios’ Stephen Christy and Ross Richie, and Jay-Z. The latter also served as a producer on The Harder They Fall, as did Lassiter.
In a statement shared with Deadline, Waid said he and Irredeemable illustrator Peter Krause were “thrilled to death” by the talent behind the adaptation. “Their unique take on the comic makes it unlike any anti-hero story I’ve ever heard, and I love it,” Waid told the publication.
In 2020, Boom Studios! announced it had signed a first-look deal with Netflix. When touting the deal that April, founder Ross Richie pointed to the two entities’ similarly fast-paced release strategies as a driving factor in the partnership.
“We generate 20+ new original series a year and are thrilled to partner with a company that is as prolific as we are,” Richie said.
