Leather suits are not on the agenda for Eddie Murphy's recently announced return to stand-up.
The revered comedian, who recently inked a deal with Netflix for a new special and has a theater tour on the horizon, confirmed as much in a New York Timesinterview out Thursday.
"Nah, man, you can't wear a leather suit at 58," Murphy said, later noting that any perceived perspiration problems involved with the practice of leather-wearing beneath stage lights never had any noticeable impact on him.
"If you watched Raw or Delirious," he observed, "I don't sweat."
As for what fans can expect in his new material, Murphy explained that he's still approaching his writing from the same perspective, albeit with years' worth of additional life experience. He's also not worried about possible public scrutiny of his material, something he's previously experienced and apologized for in his career.
"There was a time when I was at the center of everything, what I was doing, and how funny I was and how popular," he told the Times. "I'm not at the center. Now my kids are and everything revolves around them."
Before we're introduced to this stand-up revival, Murphy will be seen in Craig Brewer's Rudy Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name. Following an Oct. 4 theatrical release, the critically-lauded film will hit Netflix Oct. 25. Murphy—who plays Moore in the film—is joined in the cast by Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Chris Rock, T.I., Wesley Snipes, and more.
