Vice President-elect Mike Pence was trying to act like a normal NYC tourist on Friday night (minus the whole Secret Service thing), so he did what any well-heeled out-of-towner with a political bent would do when visiting the big city: go see Hamilton. Only, Hamilton, or at least its audience, was not so willing to see him.

As you can see in the video above, Pence was heavily booed as he entered the theater and walked to his seat. People on the scene confirmed that the booing far outweighed a small smattering of applause.

The audience continued expressing their feelings towards the soon-to-be VP even after the show started:

A fascist's deputy who believes in conversion therapy and stop & frisk went to a Hip Hop Musical about democracy. Guess what happened next!

Never stop booing Mike Pence.

"why won't the gays be more respectful of the vice president elect, who wants to literally electrocute them"

As news of the booing made its way out into the world, many expressed admiration for the crowd, pointing out that Pence's anti-gay stances were a less-than-great fit for a Broadway musical celebrating democracy. Pence's support for so-called "conversation therapy" was frequently referenced:

Tonight, VP-Elect Mike Pence attended #HamiltonBway. After the show, @BrandonVDixon delivered the following statement on behalf of the show. pic.twitter.com/Jsg9Q1pMZs

At the end of the show, the cast responded to Pence's presence directly by reading a statement. Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, spoke. "Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you...We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights... But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us."

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Pence was around to hear it.
