Idris Elba Says He's 'The Last to Know' What's Happening With 'Dark Tower' TV Series

Stephen King in an October interview reassured us his novel series The Dark Tower will, as planned, move forward with its TV series branch, no matter how poorly the film was received. But Idris Elba, the star of the film, apparently had no idea.

“You know what? I didn’t know Stephen said that. I don’t know, actually, where it lies,” Elba told Screencrush. “I must figure this out, I don’t know where it lies. I’m unfortunately the last to know at this point." Elba, who played the sharp-shooting Roland Deschain, aka the last Gunslinger, appears to be just as confused as everyone hoping to watch this long-awaited TV series. Which makes sense considering King also said it'll be "like a complete reboot."

Academy Award–winning producer Akiva Goldsman told Deadline in July Elba was “for sure” involved in the TV extension. “The first episode of a show has been written, and we hope to retain Ron [Howard]’s original idea to mix platforms, something that seemed revolutionary 10 years ago but now is something that others have done,” Goldsman said. “Idris for sure is part of this, and if the movie is Roland Deschain the Gunslinger, the show is his origin story, based on the fourth novel in the series, Wizard and Glass.”

The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara was supposed to take the lead on this project, but details are pretty scarce. The TV series is designed to run about 10 to 13 episodes and would exist in the same universe as the highly-criticized feature film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet also said production may begin in 2018.
