Fast X, the latest entry in the Fast and Furious film franchise, is racing its way down the track to a projected opening weekend of $67.25 million, according to Variety.
The film was released on Friday and had earned $28 million from 4,046 theaters, and is expected to grab another $39.25 million over the weekend ($22.43 million on Saturday and $16.82 million on Sunday). For Thursday night previews, Vin Diesel’s film brought in an extra $7.5 million.
Those numbers will be enough to knock Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 off the throne as it’s expected to pull in $32.89 million in its third weekend of release. In total, Guardians will have made over $267 million in North America.
In the international market, Fast X is projected to bring in over $250 million opening weekend, and it’s already has the second biggest global opening of the year behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, Universal coughed up $440 million to produce and promote the film so the franchise needs some help from fans in order to turn in a profit.
Fast X’s opening puts it at No. 7 on the list of the franchise’s highest box office debuts. It lands right in between 2021’s F9: The Fast Saga ($70 million) and 2019’s Hobbs and Shaw ($60 million).
The tenth Fast and Furious film stars Vin Diesel, Jason Mamoa, Michelle Rodriguez, Brie Larson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Jordana Brewster, Charlize Theron, Sung Kang and more.
