Reboot: This Week In Games: "Battlefield 4" Beta, "GTA Online" Fixes and the Search For More "Deus Ex"

Gaming is complex, so catch up each week with the short and dirty in Reboot: This Week In Games.

This week Grand Theft Auto Online dropped, brought cloud-servers to their knees and shut down the government. It wasn't that bad, but Rockstar is finally getting some updates out to gamers so everyone can get playing the online portion of the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto V.

EA-DICE released the open beta for Battlefield 4 this week giving gamers their first chance to try out some of the game's changes and play with the newly enhanced destructible environments. Bringing down a skyscraper on your opponent's head is mind blowing.

Rumors continue to fly about the possible existence of Half-Life 3 but trademark rumors were debunked by Valve. Half-Life 3 remains in the realm of white unicorns and free lunches for now.

Grand Theft Auto Online launches this week and if you're lucky enough to get into a room there will still to be a hefty wait time to play. While you’re waiting check out this police chase up Mount Chiliad from a guy you drives way better than you.

If you weren’t aware, the mountain is a great place to blow up helicopters, as they get nice and close. Also a great place to find some cliffs to jump off. Drives take a while to get used to in GTA V but this guy has got it down.

A It turns out you can make too much cash in Grand Theft Auto V. As user OmegaDL50 discovered and posted via NeoGaf, once a player steals, assassinates and sells enough hitchhikers to garner $2,147,483,647 players will find that their cash will roll over into a negative value. So watch out Los Santos' 1-percent, the math is not on your side.

On Tuesday Valve reportedly registered "Half-Life 3" as a trademark only a week after announcing Steam Machines as a new living room dominating, Steam streaming micro-console. Last night an image emerged on Reddit where a user posted a screenshot of internal development groups working at Valve. One is marked "Half-Life 3." So why all the chatter from Valve? Valve is a notoriously tight-lipped company who have been known to go into media blackout for long periods before dropping bombs like the Steam Machines. Is "Half-Life 3" really in development or is Valve boss Gabe Newell just stringing us along?

It's now known that the trademark was a fake, according to Valve. But the conspiracy theories continue, what the hell will become of Gordon Freeman almost ten years after Half-Life 2.

Speaking of long waits, Assassin's Creed IV is set to drop on November 15 and you might want to start clearing your calender now. Ashraf Ismail, the game's director explained one tester experience:

"One guy in the office actually did it two weeks ago for the first time. He got a 100% sync, which was mind blowing. This was one of our testers, so imagine he's a tester who knows the game really well. He's been working on the game for a year and a half. From zero to a hundred on one build [of the game], it took him 48/49 hours. The thing is, he knew what he was doing is the crazy part."

The open beta test for Battlefield 4 went live this week in the midst of the massive server crush of Grand Theft Auto V. It seemed like all the cloud servers in the world couldn't handle the amount of people who wanted to run each other over with cars or get a feel for the new sniping set-up in Battlefield. Some North American users even changed their Xbox 360 locations to the UK to be able to download the beta faster.

Don't worry Bad Company fans, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson told reporters at a Battlefield 4event that a third installment in the series will happen. But it won't happen anytime soon, as it has too many projects currently in development.

"But trust me, the Bad Company [team] isn't forgotten, they are just on a very long vacation," said Gustavsson.

During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) earlier this year Electronic Arts DICE announced the development of the cult hit Mirror's Edge 2 and the now-defunct Lucas Arts project Star Wars: Battlefront. Making DICE's plate understandably full.

A new trailer for Destiny dropped this week showing off the insanely detailed next-gen graphics we can expect from Activision's and Bungie's upcoming MMO/shooter, Destiny is leading the way for reasons I will get broken up with this coming Spring.

This week saw the revealing of the launch dates for some long-awaited titles and the expansion of one of our favorite series.

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea the eagerly anticipated downloadable content that returns players to the undersea utopia of Rapture, will be out this holiday season. Irrational Games head Ken Levine said there are two episodes planned, the first to be out before the end of this year, while the second is still in development.

Telltale Games, the creators of the critically acclaim and epically tear-jerking episodic game The Walking Dead, revealed that its next game The Wolf Among Us' first episode is set to drop later this month. The Wolf Among Us: Faith will be the game's first episode set in Bill Willingham's graphic novel world of Fables.

Eidos Montreal annouced this week that it will vastly expand the Deus Ex series. The Deus Ex: Universe will include updated games on multiple platforms on a "regular basis" and to develop at "deep conspiracy" that spans multiple games. Not limited to PC and console games, Universe will include mobile games, books and graphic novels. Anfossi says that Eidos Montreal is "already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and next-gen consoles."

Grand Theft Auto Online is still working through its teething issues after having launched earlier this week. With the huge success of Grand Theft Auto V Rockstar Games, the creator of the GTA series, knew the online launch was going to be rocky, and it has been. Rockstar has posted a list of known issues as it attempts to get everyone online in a stable environment.

On friday an update went live for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users to attempt to fix some of the worst issues. One bottleneck in the online experience is a tutorial race and shootout mission that all players must go through the first time they log in. "Many players have been unable to get through this with repeated retries, and we are working on unblocking this for everyone as soon as possible," says a Rockstar spokesperson.

The voice actors of GTA V have responded to accusations that the game promotes and "glamorizes violence." In an interview with PC Advisor the actors responded to concerns that the game is promoting real-world violence.

Ned Luke, who plays the depressed mid-life crisis bank robber Michael De Santa, says "Anyone who has any conception at all about the games and hasn't played them should go play the games before they open their mouths."
