Cartoon Network series Steven Universe is being adapted into a TV movie, and it has just been revealed that the upcoming project will be a musical featuring a choir of talent including Chance the Rapper, Gallant, Estelle, Uzo Aduba, Patti LuPone, Aimee Mann, and more.
Cartoon Network revealed the musical aspect of the upcoming release in a trailer on Thursday, in which they noted that the soundtrack will feature "new songs by Rebecca Sugar in collaboration with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winners." Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year, the movie will see series protagonist Steven, who thinks his time defending the Earth is over, face his biggest challenge yet when a new threat comes to Beach City.
According to Deadline, series creator Rebecca Sugar returns to the helm for the musical adaptation. Chance is listed as a co-executive producer, alongside Kat Morris, Joe Johnston, Alonso Ramirez Ramos, and Ian Jones-Quartey.
During an interview with Gizmodo in 2018, Sugar discussed how she expertly curates the playlist for the show and said that she keeps Chance's music in heavy rotation. "I’m listening to a lot of Chance the Rapper right now," she said. "I love his version of the Arthur theme—it’s so good."
The series' characters will also be performing musical numbers, including Garnet (Estelle), Bismuth (Aduba), Yellow Diamond (Patti LuPone), Ruby (Charlyne Yi), Pearl (Deedee Magno Hall), and Amethyst (Michaela Dietz).
Steven Universe: The Movie will be released on DVD later in the year and the soundtrack will be distributed digitally and physically.
